School of Tourism, Hospitality and Entertainment Management
The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management is located at Camp Road and it provides training for students preparing for a career in the Tourism and Hospitality sectors.
The Tourism industry has grown significantly in importance to the Jamaican economy over the last twenty years, and today is one of the pillars of the economy. The Jamaican economy has been transformed in the process into a knowledge-based, service-oriented economy, raising the importance of human capital in enterprises, and thus today the Tourism and service sectors contributes significantly to the Jamaican economy. The increase in the importance of restaurants, hotels, hospitality and tourism and the service sectors in general has resulted in a great demand for workers to serve in these areas. These factors have thus raised the need to properly serve this sector with real quality graduates.
The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management seeks to fill the identified gaps in training and education in the Jamaican tourism and hospitality sectors, by providing high quality graduates to work in these areas. Our aim as is the case with most of our programmes is to create linkages with industry players, this in order to provide opportunities for real world experiences for our students and also to make the transition into the industry that much easier upon graduation for them and at the same time providing the business sector with graduates who are ready for the job market. In this regard we have a well established internship/work-study programme for our students to gain valuable experience both here and abroad. This also serves the students very well in that it provides them with a source of funds to help offset tuition fees, purchase textbooks and so on.
